Apprenticeship success on the IT Helpdesk at the University of Essex

Back in 2016, the IT Helpdesk at the University of Essex were struggling to manage the increasing number of support queries being received by the expanding student body, whilst receiving minimal extra funding for staff increases. Although we hadn’t had any developmental roles on the Helpdesk before, we decided to take on two apprentices as a trial. One apprentice made such a good impression he was offered a permanent role on the staff team and is now a star performer on the Helpdesk. The success of this has spurred us on to employ more students in developmental roles and to consider a staff development programme, from apprentice to manager, within the department.

Engaging with youth based employment initiatives, is one way to create new pathways for career development for young people, which in turn can positively transform and reinvigorate our teams in the workplace. Anthony will provide an insight into youth based initiatives he's engaged with over the last few years in the University, reflect on those that have made an impact, including modern apprenticeships and talk about possibilities for the future.
