UCISA’s information security training has been refreshed and updated for UCISA Institutional members. The new materials provide a fresh new look and feel, with up-to-date content on the key risks for today. The materials may be used free of charge in their default format or adapted to meet local needs in a highly cost-effective way. Various implementation options are possible to meet the wide variety of needs across the sector. Institutions may configure the materials themselves using GOMO or use external services from our implementation partner GP Strategies at UCISA negotiated rates.
The core online course for all staff takes around 30 minutes to complete. In addition, a suite of ~10-minute additional extra modules are provided for specific situations (Research, Data Protection and Privileged Access). The materials are designed using an adaptive learning approach incorporating knowledge checks within the modules. As a result, completion of the course demonstrates sufficient knowledge transfer, and an additional test/exam is not required.
This approach, incorporating a fresh and modern style, including full accessibility support, ensures that learning can take place with minimal impact on staff time, whilst providing institutions with sufficient assurance.
Institutions can make all or part of the course available through their VLE / training environment. It can be used as-is or adapted/extended. Institutions may choose to fully manage the course themselves (using the Gomo editing tool), or purchase additional support through our implementation partner, GP Strategies Ltd.
UCISA intends to maintain the training material on an annual basis and undertakes to develop further optional modules where there is a requirement from the membership
The course is available free of charge to all UCISA institutional members but may not be passed on to third parties. We are sorry but the course is not available to affiliate, corporate or individual members.
The course was originally developed by a consortium of 5 Universities led by the University of Leicester in conjunction with Leo Learning Technologies, and in its original form won the UCISA-Eduserv Award for Excellence 2011. After an extensive market survey in 2015, UCISA selected the course as the basis for an updated product to be made available to the HE and FE sector, which happened early in 2016. A revised version with video content and a more modular design was released in June 2017. Further revised edition was released in Sprint 2020.
This newly revised edition UCISA now has the necessary intellectual property rights to update and distribute the course to its members in perpetuity, and plans to revise the course regularly based on feedback from the community.
The course is presented as a zipped SCORM 1.2 package to upload into the VLE of your choice. It should be suitable for use on a wide range of browsers and mobile devices. <
You can find all the SCORM files and artwork available to download in the dedicated Information Security MS Teams Site. The site also contains access to the toolkit and allows you to communicate and share documents with others using the training. The Teams Site is open to anyone from an institutional member.
